Enjoy Indian Street Food at Khau Galli

Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) is a melting pot of cuisines from around the world. Just think of any food you want to try, and you’ll find it at JLT, Dubai. Finding Indian restaurants is very easy as there are quite a few here. A few days back, I was at JLT to try Khau Galli, a Bollywood themed casual dining Indian restaurant serving street food, predominantly from the northern part of India.

It situated on basement level in Cluster T with an indoor and outdoor dining areas. The tables indoor are separated by see-through barriers and the ones outdoor are properly spaced. Filmy wordings and pictures adorned the walls and one part of the interior was also decorated with the front part of an autorickshaw. The juice counter resembled the ones found on the streets in India. A sanitizer was also placed at the entrance and the staff wore masks at all times.

I arrived with a few of my friends in the evening and we sat outdoors. It was a nice setting with a beautiful view of the lake and the ever-tall buildings of JLT on the other side of the lake. The weather was favourable too.

We started off with drinks and some starters. I had Sugarcane Juice while my friends had Soda Shikanji. The sugarcane juice was fresh and not overly sweet. Loved the cups in which the juices were served. Perfect for the ‘gram 🙂

Starters were Khau Galli special Chaat and Tandoori Veg. Platters. Chaat Platter consisted of pani puris, dahi papdi chaat, vada pav and a few others of which I’m not sure of the names, served on a charpai. Dahi papdi chaat was good though pani puri was just ok. Pani puri is one of my favourites and this one just didn’t tick all the right boxes.

Tandoori Veg. Platter consisted of panner tikka, malai paneer tikka, malai broccoli, grilled mushrooms and grilled aloo stuffed with paneer, served with green chutney and a tomato-onion salad. The portion size is perfect for a group of 3-4 persons and taste-wise too, it was good. I especially loved the paneer tikka, mushrooms, and the paneer stuffed aloo.

We ordered the mains after having the starters, but it didn’t take too long for the food to arrive. Meri Maggi Masala served in a copper container propped up on a tricycle was a sight to behold. It was hot and spicy and reminded me of the time when I had maggi on the streets of Darjeeling during one of our trips. Hot spicy maggi in cold weather is sheer bliss. Another main dish that we tried was Oriental Sizzler, fried rice, Paneer Manchurian and French fries served on a banana leaf on a sizzling plate. the fried rice was amazing and so was the Manchurian. Great flavours and the paneer was soft. We also tried Aakhri Pasta, penne in arrabiata sauce with topped with olives and cheese. Served warm, this was good but not the best.

Whenever I dine at Indian restaurants, desserts is what I eagerly look forward to and this time was no different. We were served a dessert platter which included their famous jabeli with rabdi, moong dal halwa, gajar ka halwa and gulab jamuns. The jamuns were really soft and melting in the mouth. The halwas were good too but my favourite was the warm jalebis. While my friends preferred it dipped in rabdi, I loved it as such. I could go on eating that for ever. It was a wonderful ending to our time at Khau Galli.
